About This Item

We believe that Primitivo may have been the first Zinfandel clone planted by Anton Nichelini in 1890. This 129th vintage, blended with Petite Sirah 10% for added complexity, was barrel-aged in American oak. Deep ruby color, with rich flavors of cherry, red currant, toasted oak & clove, with a hint of sweetness brought out by notes of strawberry & vanilla. Full-bodied, smooth & rich. A versatile wine that pairs deliciously with burgers or barbecue, Mexican cuisine, roast chicken or a cheese course.

Winemaker Notes

To continue the tradition of my family, that has been growing and producing Primitivo for the past 129 years. Primitivo is the luxury clone of Zinfandel, with its smaller berries and looser clusters. In the vineyard, we meticulously thin so that every single cluster makes a perfect curtain of fruit along the cordon without a single berry overlapping each other. This is how we make great Primitivo, with a little finesse and a lot of diligence in the cellar as well. I’m always trying to make my family proud one bottle at a time! Regarding style, I aim for a Primitivo that has an elegant quality that is classic to our region, the Chiles Valley Appellation of Napa Valley. These specific vines have roots that penetrate deep into the mineral rich soil of this high valley. The result is an elegant, refined, classically smooth Primitivo.
